Pledge Allegiance The Finch Book 1 eBook Rider England

Shaun Blake had once had it all. As captain of the ISS Oregon, he‘d commanded his crew in the Horde War and helped to protect Earth. It was a dream come true for a farm boy from Idaho.
But the dream shattered a year ago when a Horde ship blew the Oregon out of space, leaving Blake and a single crew member as the only survivors.
Now, Blake is a gambler and a drunk living in the slums on Iton-3. His only interest is winning money at the WarZone tables and trying to forget who he was. He blames himself for every death that occurred under his command.
When a woman named Jane Baltimore approaches Blake in a bar and says she has a job for him, he isn’t interested. Until she tells him the job is to captain a ship about to embark on a search and rescue mission.
There are more surviving crew members from the Oregon.
And they’re stuck on a planet deep in Horde space.

Pledge Allegiance The Finch Book 1 eBook Rider England Reviews
This is a great start to what I hope will be a long series. Good characters, very well written, plenty of action, and you can tell there will be a lot more to come. For a first novel, this was simply excellent. I'm definitely ready for more of the Finch and crew. The only drawback (for me) was it was way too short. But hey, that won't stop me from buying the next one(s).
This was a fun, if simplistic (and familiar to any sci-fi fan) story. I liked Blake and his crew, but I never felt I got to know them well or that there was the opportunity for any significant character growth. I liked that two of the main characters, two of the best fighters were women. But it felt a little cliche that one was almost childlike in her joy and the other basically emotionless. (To be fair, the male soldiers were even flatter.)
This is a good set up for a further series, but on its own it's largely a protracted fight scene. And even in that it's pretty weak, as the characters seemed to triumph a bit too easily. But as a just-for-fun read, I call it a success.
Kudos to the narrator though, I don't know if Blake would have felt as charismatic if he hadn't had his distinct drawl.
This first book in the series has it all. The main character has a true passion when it concerns his crew and mission. He seemed lost in a fog of PTSD, but was brought out of it by being given a mission to rescue some people he thought dead. His subordinates include a Legionaire, an Acs Pilot, and a Japanese raised Ninja/Samurai and a cyborg Engineer!!! This alone rates at least a four star rating. The actions further into the story adds the fifth star!!!
The premise of the Imperium is that they are the final Governme t and Authrity in human controlled space. They are fighting an Alien adversary called the HORDE, which is controlled by the OUTSIDERS. They are staring to invade the IMPERIUM by taking mind control of individual high ranking members and turning ordinary people and soldiers into automatons. Copy. Blake and crew are able to overcome their adversaries and escape with the survivors to an unnamed planet!!!!
Boring with a capital B. Why bother pretending you are telling a story or that it's science fiction when it's nothing but a poorly disguised running battle. A pox on writers that do this.
What a wonderful read, lots of creativity in this author's work and adventure, intriguing character's, great development and very thought-provoking. JK
It seems to be just a first act that needed a bit more fleshing out. Still it was a decent story. A captain who has along with one other survived the loss of his ship and every one else abound gets a chance to redeem himself. He is told there are survivors and given a chance to rescue them. Seems to be good editing as I didn't run into the usual problems of wrong or misspelled words. Compliments to the author for that. Overall I am looking forward to the next book.
Good space adventure with interesting characters. Well written, good grammar, few examples of millenial spelling. Suitable for teens, very smart pre-teens.
Very nice read. I enjoyed the book completely, finishing in six days.
